2–3 minutes

✨Benjamin Johnston✨AKA @benisjamin1994 is the FIRST #SKINSTORY to be shared for #PsoriasisAwarenessMonth

I hope that these stories help you connect and feel less alone through mutual understanding of the way in which our skin can make us feel. I also hope that these stories reach those who don’t suffer from Psoriasis so they can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of living with a skin conditon.

NOW OVER TO 𝗕𝗲𝗻🥁⬇️

I’ve been living with psoriasis for the past 15 yrs…. It all started off in a maths lesson back in 2009, I was working through a question and remember scratching my scalp which felt especially itchy. All these white flakes ended up all over my workbook … I felt embarrassed so I stopped itching and remember thinking to myself that I’ll “check that out when I get home”.

When I got home, my mum had a look and said it looked like ‘ringworm’. We booked a GP appointment and the GP said it was psoriasis.

At the time I had no idea what psoriasis was and assumed it was some sort of fungal infection which would clear …

Psoriasis is a NOT CONTAGIOUS!!! AND… If someone’s different to you , it doesn’t need highlighting.

Something that used to bother me was always what other people would think.  And for a long time up until recently I was really bothered about other people’s opinions.

I used to look at myself in the mirror in somewhat disgust until I joined the local gym. This for me was a turning point where I could feel happy in my own skin.

Do you have any advice for anyone who is suffering from Psoriasis, or similar skin conditions?

Yes.  Do not rely on medical advice. This may seem somewhat controversial but, GPS aren’t experts of everything.  Unfortunately, they’re quick enough to prescribe steroid tropics etc before trying other methods.

For me , Dovonex (non steroid, blue lid) is my go to.

But prior to this… I was led to believe Dovobet (with added steroid) was my only option (red lid). It’s so important to give the non steroid ointments a go first for a fair amount of time.

TRIAL & ERROR

Having said this, steroids aren’t a weakness. Sometimes it’s what’s needed for a short amount of time. It’s not a sign of weakness, and others shouldn’t judge just because they can manage without.

@PsoriasisUK  + @Cyapsoriasis (For her honesty). I feel like connecting with others and hearing real stories is relatable and can really help.  Also,  there isn’t a right or wrong way to control your condition.  It’s all about personal preferences 🙂

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORY, Ben!

love always,

Katie
