Can You Get a Tattoo If You Have Eczema?

2–3 minutes

Hey, my names Katie, I’ve had eczema since birth and recently got my 3rd & 4th tattoos. I am writing this blog for the gals & guys who have sensitive and eczema prone skin who have always wanted tats but have always been scared they wouldn’t react well.

Having eczema doesn’t mean you can’t get a tattoo. My advice is talk to your chosen tattoo artist about your eczema/ skin concern, and If you are worried about a potential reaction, tell your artist in advance and perhaps request a patch test of ink if it’s your first tat! Also, confirm that the artist has hypoallergenic inks, allergy-friendly gloves (latex-free) and allergy-friendly soap and moisturizers… Let them know if your sensitive to things like latex / alcohol wipes so they can accommodate other options DO NOT wait until the day, comfort is key!

Don’t let your eczema hold you back from self expression 👌🏻

TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR TATTOO

  1. Remove the bandage/ cling film/ second skin within 24 hours, or as directed by your tattoo artist.
  2. Take the protective layer off and wash the tattoo with warm [unscented] soapy water in the shower. Pat it dry with a clean towel or paper towel then start applying a cream. Don’t submerge the tattoo in water.
  3. Dab on ointment from the tattoo shop/ or your fave non steroid based ointment like Balmonds Skin Salvation or Bepanthen for around four days is best.
  4. After a few days, switch to a fragrance-free moisturizer to prevent itchiness. Like MooGoo Milk Udder Cream, La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 SPF50, Weleda Skin Food, CeraVe Moisturising Cream. Cream the tattoo a couple of times a day for two weeks /whenever it feels dry!

What to avoid in the following two weeks:

  • Swimming pools, sunbeds, jacuzzis, saunas or steam rooms.
  • Fake tanning.
  • Long soaking in the bath – stick to quick showers.
  • Scratching or picking.
  • Exposure to the sun.

In my personal experience, every single time I’ve got a tattoo I’ve had some sort of flare somewhere. Which was scary when I went to get my first tattoo as all the eczema advice I see online for tats advises against getting any when flaring. I just want to share I have never had an adverse reaction and always healed perfectly. A little itchy but I am an itchy gal anyway so just moisturize the area when that sensation comes on ! Also, I would never get a tattoo on an area I tend to flare regularly as it can increase ink bleeding / fading in future.

I could not recommend @thelondonsocial // @megalicetattoo more! Friendly, knowledgeable and super talented. These are my fave tattoos I’ve ever got! Such gorgeous fine lines !

I hope this helps and remember this is my personal experience and advise.

With lots of love. if my gran were still alive, she’d kill me for doing it. But its given me a sense of calm. Every other negative feeling I’ve had in the world has been met with “this is only temporary” but that line of reasoning doesn’t work for grief. This is part of my healing and grief process.
