Today has been a long time coming—the start of many tests I’ve needed for years. My whole life, I’ve been told I have contact dermatitis, but it wasn’t until adulthood that I truly began to understand what that meant. It’s been such a journey learning to articulate what I’m experiencing, push for what I need, and advocate for myself.
Living with eczema and allergies has always felt like walking through a maze without a map. From sudden flares triggered by unknown irritants to the relentless itch that makes the simplest tasks feel impossible, it’s exhausting. For years, I’ve been left guessing what’s truly causing my skin to react—products, fabrics, foods, or even stress. And as if managing the physical symptoms weren’t enough, there’s also the emotional weight of constantly feeling misunderstood or dismissed.
So how did I get here today? By pushing for answers and advocating for myself every step of the way. I started by requesting IgE blood tests based on specific suspicions I had about my reactions, which gave me a clearer picture of potential allergens. I also used the NHS online system to report every flare-up and allergy reaction I experienced to my GP. Over months, this created a detailed record of evidence that I could present when I finally got referred back to dermatology.
If you’re navigating the NHS system, my advice is to document everything. Keep notes, report flares, and don’t be afraid to push for the referrals you need. Knowledge is power, and having that evidence can make all the difference.
A quick tip for anyone referred to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital: arrive at least 20 minutes early! It’s a massive hospital, but I was so impressed by how well-run it was and how thorough and compassionate the dermatology team is. Today’s patch testing feels like a step closer to understanding my body. It’s not an overnight fix, but it’s a chance to identify root causes and regain a sense of control.
If you’ve ever felt dismissed or trapped in the uncertainty of managing your health, this is your reminder: you deserve answers. Keep asking questions, keep showing up for yourself, and don’t let anyone make you feel like your pain isn’t valid❤️🩹
