👋🏻𝐃𝐘𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐃𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐂 𝐄𝐂𝐙𝐄𝐌𝐀👋🏻 I get a lot of DM’s about my hand eczema so I thought it was time finally talk about what exactly it is. 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑: 𝐄𝐜𝐳𝐞𝐦𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬, Eczema is simply a blanket term used for a cluster of skin conditions / rashes. 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑾𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑶𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔.

𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲, 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭. So I have had eczema since birth (1996) but this eczema changed in 2017, I suddenly started getting blistery eczema on my feet. At the time I was working as a lifeguard and wearing flip flops on poolside my feet would constantly be getting wet/ in contact with chlorine / floor cleaner / etc.. so I never really thought anything of it and had no idea what dyshidrotic eczema was.
𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰: Pompholyx ( AKA dyshidrotic eczema) is a type of eczema that causes tiny blisters to develop across the fingers, palms of the hands and sometimes the soles of the feet. In severe cases, the blisters may be quite large and may spread to the backs of the hands, feet and limbs. 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐇, you guessed it I am a severe case (occasionally), I do often get it on both sides of my hands making daily tasks excruciatingly painful. It’s not clear what causes pompholyx, but things that may make it worse include some 𝒔𝒌𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔, 𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔.

𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 and I haven’t had it on my feet for a few years (randomly went away one day and never came back). Only ever get it recurring on my hands. I have noticed for me my dyshidrotic ECZEMA is most definitely caused by contact with TRIGGERS (some are unavoidable unless I consistently wear gloves) like dust & when touching dry surfaces that have detergents / disinfectants on them. 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄, order a drink at a bar and leaning on it (BOOM FLARE), even sitting at a restaurant table and resting my hands down (BOOM FLARE) and even pressing the stop button / grabbing a handle bar on the bus (BOOM FLARE). It is actually a joke how sensitive my hands are.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬? for me I find ointment style creams to be the best for treating my dyshidrotic ECZEMA. Overnight apply loads with cotton gloves ! Also when your blisters are particularly bad put some compression gloves on, I find carrying out daily tasks less painful / way easier when I do this. Speaking of blisters, 𝐃𝐎 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐏𝐎𝐏 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌, I know I get it, its weirdly satisfying to pop them. 𝐁𝐔𝐓, by popping them you are making yourself way more susceptible to 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. If I have particularly broken skin
on my hands I apply an antiseptic cream a few times a week to ensure it doesn’t get infected. Before applying I wash my hands with warm water & wear cotton gloves to bed as a protective barrier. 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: you can remove your cream by using a clean implement (like a spoon) instead of hands to reduce the chance of bacteria/dust entering your cream containers. HOPE THIS HELPS ❤️
⚠️You should make an appointment with your doctor if you have: Any suspicious area of red or painful skin. High fever or fever accompanying skin symptoms. Pus-filled blisters. REMINDER: it might not always be Pompholyx ( AKA dyshidrotic eczema)⚠️
